EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER UPGRADE COURSE
The Emergency Medical Responder Upgrade course (also known as the First Responder to Emergency Medical Responder Bridge) allows participants who have a valid Red Cross First Responder certificate (or equivalent) to upgrade to Emergency Medical Responder in only 40 hours.
Participants will learn and demonstrate all knowledge and skills needed to provide appropriate patient assessments, interventions, and ongoing care, including the transportation of a patient to a healthcare facility. This course follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) as defined by the Paramedic Association of Canada and is the first level of training recognized by the NOCP.
Participants will be engaged in dynamic training techniques including video, media presentations, skills demonstrations, practice sessions, discussions, and scenarios based on real-life situations.
Successful participants will receive a Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder certification recognizing their training. It is valid for 3 years.

FAQs
The Emergency Medical Responder Upgrade course (also known as the First Responder to Emergency Medical Responder Bridge) is for participants who hold a valid Red Cross First Responder certificate (or equivalent).
EMRs work in all areas including rural and remote locations where they may provide the highest level of pre-hospital care.
EMR training is often a prerequisite for employment in Fire, EMS or integrated Fire/EMS services throughout Canada.

No, all First Responder courses are 100% in person.

Participants in our courses are certified through the Canadian Red Cross.
Unless otherwise indicated, this is 40- hour course is hosted over two weekends and is generally scheduled as follows:
- Saturdays – 9:00am -7:00pm
- Saturdays – 9:00am -7:00pm
There is no recertification for Bridge courses. Candidates will enroll in the recertification course of the level they are recertifying. Refer to our First Responder course list for recertification requirements.
