Be Seen, Stay Safe: Nighttime Safety for Cyclists & Pedestrians

With the Fall Equinox just days away and daylight hours getting shorter, road safety becomes even more critical, especially for cyclists and pedestrians!

While often there is less traffic at night, danger increases:

Did you know that 77% of pedestrian fatalities occur after dark? 😳

The combination of reduced visibility, dark clothing, inadequate lighting, and the false assumption that drivers can see you makes nighttime travel far riskier.

Visibility Is Your #1 Safety Tool! Whether you’re walking the dog, biking home from work or school, or out for an evening jog, being visible can save your life. Here’s how to stay safe and seen:

For Cyclists: Light Up and Gear Up! 🚴‍♂️

✅ Use Lights:

  • White front light and red rear light, required by law in many areas and essential for visibility.
  • Rechargeable LED lights are compact and bright. Use flashing modes for even better visibility.

✅ Add Reflectors:

  • Install reflective tape or stickers on your bike frame, pedals, helmet, and wheels.
  • Wear bright or retro-reflective gear, especially on moving parts like ankles or knees, which help catch drivers’ attention.

⚠️ Avoid Hazards:

  • Ride defensively. Reduced visibility affects both your ability to see obstacles and drivers’ reaction time.
  • Watch for debris, potholes, and vehicles pulling out unexpectedly.

For Pedestrians: Be Bright, Not Invisible 🚶‍♀️

✅ Reflective Materials:

  • Use retro-reflective tape or accents on jackets, shoes, backpacks, and even pet leashes.
  • Many running and outdoor brands sell reflective gear designed for night use.

✅ Choose Bright Colours:

  • Black, navy, and grey clothing make you nearly invisible in low light.
  • Bright yellows, oranges, and greens are far more effective, especially when combined with reflective materials.

✅ Stay Visible:

  • If you use mobility aids (canes, walkers), add reflective tape or lights to increase their visibility too.

General Nighttime Safety Tips

✅ Be Predictable:

  • Follow traffic laws, signals, and signs. Unpredictable movements confuse drivers and increase risk.

✅ Face Traffic When Walking:

  • If no sidewalk is available, walk facing oncoming traffic. It’s easier to see and react to cars.

✅ Use Crosswalks and Intersections:

  • Avoid jaywalking or crossing in poorly lit areas. Cross where drivers expect you to be.

✅ Drivers: Help Keep Everyone Safe

  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
  • Stop far enough back to allow other drivers to see crossing pedestrians.
  • Avoid distractions and stay alert, especially in residential or low-light areas.
