Partnering with Community Groups to Bring Youth Safety Training to Local Families

At 13 First Aid Training, we believe safety education is strongest when it’s rooted in community connection. Recently, we had the opportunity to partner with the Carleton Place Public Library to offer youth safety courses as part of their March Break programming, and it perfectly reflects what we love to do!

As a Training Partner of the Canadian Red Cross, our goal is simple: make high-quality, engaging safety education accessible to families wherever they are. While we’re proud to serve the Carleton Place area, and have a training facility located there, our partnerships extend well beyond one community.

We work with libraries, schools, youth organizations, sports groups, camps, and community associations to deliver meaningful, practical training in spaces families already know and trust.

Why Do Community Partnerships Matter? 🤝

When organizations collaborate, everyone benefits, especially youth.

Hosting safety training through established community groups:

  • Increases accessibility for families

  • Creates a comfortable, familiar learning environment

  • Encourages community-wide engagement

  • Helps youth gain essential life skills close to home

Whether it’s a March Break program, a PD Day workshop, a summer camp add-on, or an after-school initiative, youth safety training fits seamlessly into community programming.

Why Youth Safety Training Matters 🧑‍🤝‍🧑:

Today’s youth are increasingly independent; walking home from school, staying home alone, caring for siblings, or preparing to start babysitting.

Our Canadian Red Cross Youth Courses are designed to be interactive, age-appropriate, and empowering. They provide real-world knowledge and practical skills that help young people:

  • Stay safe at home and in their communities

  • Build confidence when spending time on their own

  • Care responsibly for younger children

  • Prepare for their first job as a babysitter

  • Respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations

Beyond first aid, these programs build leadership, responsibility, confidence, and strong decision-making skills that last a lifetime.

Stay Safe! (Ages 9–13)

The Canadian Red Cross Stay Safe! program teaches youth how to stay safe when they’re without direct supervision from a parent, guardian, or trusted adult.

Duration: 5–6 hours
Prerequisite: Minimum 9 years of age (or completion of Grade 3)

Participants Learn:

  • Responsibility and accountability when home alone

  • How to set and follow safety rules

  • Strategies to stay safe in their neighbourhood and community

  • How to prepare for, recognize, and respond to unexpected situations (such as severe weather, strangers, or unanticipated visits)

  • Basic first aid skills

This course builds independence while giving families peace of mind.

Babysitter’s Course (Ages 11–15)

The Canadian Red Cross Babysitter’s Course prepares youth to care for children safely, confidently, and professionally.

Duration: 7–8 hours
Prerequisite: Minimum 11 years of age (or completion of Grade 5)
Certification: Babysitter Completion Certificate

Participants Learn:

  • Leadership and professionalism

  • Decision-making and behaviour management skills

  • Children’s developmental stages and age-appropriate care

  • Feeding, diapering, dressing, and supervising children safely

  • How to prevent and respond to emergencies

  • Essential first aid skills

  • The business side of babysitting, including how to promote themselves to families

This course not only supports safe childcare, it also helps youth build entrepreneurial skills and confidence as they prepare for their first job experience.
